The word career also means vocation, occupation or profession. This is an important aspect of life because the whole life of a person revolves around it. In order to utilize the inborn qualities, interests and abilities one needs to select the right career.
Selecting a wrong career can lead to many upheavals in life. If you do not get satisfaction from your work you cannot keep a balanced and peaceful mind and your whole life is in turmoil.
The career planning must begin when you have to decide at school about the stream of subjects for study. The planning process must begin with Self-Evaluation.
1. Self-Evaluation: Before you think of any career in particular you need to identify your personal skills, plus points, attributes, likes and dislikes etc. This step must begin quite early around the age of thirteen to fourteen years. Initiating this process is the responsibility of parents and teachers.
The times have changed; today children are much more aware and alert. They must view their attributes under a microscope of rational mind. One can always take help of parents, teachers and professional consultants.
2. Career Exploration: Once you have analysed yourself and gathered information about your skills, abilities and interests the next step is to explore various possibilities in the field of your interest or the career field which you have decided to consider.
With the help of parents one can gather information through telephone, emails, meetings or booklets etc. Professionals of any field are generally quite interested to share their views and provide valuable information. Even alumni of your school or college can prove helpful. Thus first hand information from people working in the field of your interest can be very practical and helpful.
3. Decision Making: Even after going through the above steps you may not be in a position for deciding finally about your career. You may still have lots of questions on your mind and fears about wrong choice.
Decision making may be easier for some than others but you have to decide. Remember that whole life is a learning process and it is never too late to change your mind or learn from your own experiences. So be bold take some more time but make up your mind and stick to it.
