TEN NIYAMAS

Penance/austerity(Tapah): The word tapah literally means “heat”;it also implies austerities. Our scriptures mention three types of tapahs:  physical (sharirik), vocal (vachik) and mental (manasik). Tapah is all about controlling the mind and strengthening one’s willpower, and a controlled mind and strong willpower helps a person emerge a winner in life.

Contentment(Santosha): There is no end to the needs of a human being. The more he gets, the more he wants. A person who is always in need can never be satisfied. So a person should find satisfaction in whatever he getsand this, in turn, gives birth to happiness. Happiness resides where satisfaction is complete.

Belief in the Supreme(Astikyam):  A supreme power controls all of us;he is the creator of the universe. Belief in the Almighty will remove both pride and ego from a person. There are some people who don’t believe in any religion; yet, they can’t deny the existence of a supreme power.

Charity(Daan): Our holy scriptures give special importance to charity. A person should give charity to needy people. It need not beonly material things: emotional and mental support to the needy is also regarded as a daan. While giving charity, there should not be even an iota of hesitation in one’s mind, and neither should he look forward to publicity in any form.

Worshipping God(Ishwara Pujanam):Worshipping God is not confined to religious rituals alone;it is submission to God, andthe act of worship that enables one to have a divine experience. A person should submit his mind and soul to the Almighty to attain divine consciousness, and it is not essential to go on a pilgrimage in search of God. God is omnipresent, he is everywhere. A devotee can feel him anywhere.

Listening to Discourses of Spiritual Scriptures (Siddhanta):There’s a special section in the Vedas on this. Listening to spiritual discourses enables a person to acquire knowledge on spiritual facts, and understand life and the mystery of the universe. Without spiritual knowledge, a person can never be happy or satisfied. He will be just like a fish out of water. Spiritual scriptures offer the much-needed knowledge to a person.

Modesty (Hree):Modesty enhances one’s personality. A person has to equip himself with virtues, and should surrender himself to God and devote himself in good deeds. Consequently, modesty will developthrough devotion to the lord, no modesty can evolve without devotion. Devotion empowers a person to negate pride and ego,and a person without pride and ego can look upon himself as a modest one.

Discerning Intellect(Mati):The ability of a person to differentiate between good and evil is called mati. One must be in a position to know what the truth is and what is otherwise. A person without mati is equivalent to a wild creature; discerning intellect empowers a person to be a superior creature in this universe. Our scriptures have strictly instructed us not to consume any alcoholic drinks as it neutralizesone’smati and makes him equivalent to wild animals.

Mantra repetition(Japa): If a person repeats a mantra again and again, it makes animpact on his subconscious mind. One needn’t think about it;it just comes out automatically and creates vibrations in the atmosphere. The japas create positive energy around us and influence our mind. In our scriptures, many mantras are available for different purposes. The “Om” is the most prominent of all

Sacrifice(Hutam):Sacrifice doesn’t only mean offering oblations in a fire ceremony. It has a broader meaning:it means the sacrifice of desires, sacrifice of the ego and sacrifice of all negative aspects in one’s life. Giving oblation in a fire ceremony is only the symbolic representation of sacrifice. The symbolism should be accompanied by real practices too, to make a sacrifice truly beneficial.
