TEN RULES FOR PIOUS LIFE

The yams are ten rules of conducts that must be followed to lead a pious life. These are:
Non-violence (Ahinsa): Ahimsa literally means non-violence,but it actually signifies the absence of desire to harm anyone. Apart from physical harm, it also signifies mental, emotional and psychological harm. Ahimsa is not confined to any religious connotation;it’s one of the basic elements of life. If a person harms anyone, he creates an imbalance in himself, which is far more dangerous than the harm he caused to anyone else.

Truthor Honesty: In this Kaliyug, dishonesty amongst people is rising day by day. A time will come, when dishonesty will be at its peak, resulting in the destruction of human civilization. While committing any act of dishonesty, people don’t realize that they are being dishonest to themselves —because they themselves will suffer for their actions. The person committing the dishonest act suffers the most. Honesty must be maintained in order to live a peaceful life.

Non-stealing: A person is not supposed to take anything that does not belong to him. The act of stealing generates a sense of guilt in the person and ultimately he will undergo mental trauma. The act of stealing actually gives him much more trouble than the so-called happiness he got by stealing the object. Such happiness is also imaginary as a stolen item.

Continence (Brahmacharya): The word brahmacharya is the combination of two words, brahman and charya. Brahman means pure consciousness and charya means one who moves. Thus, brahmacharya means one who lives with pure consciousness. As a layman, we often use the word, brahmacharya to indicate abstinence from sexual relation with anyone. But actually a married person can also be a brahmachari while an unmarried person may not be so. It depends on the pureness of mind. If one has a pure conscious, he will see men and women alike with the pureness of mind; he achieves the state of brahmacharya.

Forgiveness (Kshama): Forgiveness has special importance in Hindu traditions. It enables a person to rise above the rest. Through kshama, a person negates the anger that has risen in his mind and the desire for revenge. And it offers peace. On the other hand, if a person is not in a position to forgive the guilty one, it generates anger; he looks for revenge and this creates more miseries for him. Forgiveness brings peace of mind to the forgiver. By forgiving someone, a person accumulates spiritual treasure that he can even carry forward to the next birth.

Endurance: Endurance is the perseverance that we must follow in life. The road to success is full of hurdles and obstacles. Yet we must have stay in the right track to attain our goal. If a person gives up or takes a different route because of the difficulties he is facing, he will never reach his destination. The world will end there for him or will lead to another destination where more worries and troublesawait him. A person has to persevere and walk the right path to reach his goal.

Compassion(Karuna):A person must have compassion for the young, old, weaker and the poor, asall are a part of the supreme soul. Expressing compassion to a person is comparable to the worship of the supreme soul. The supreme soul is pleased and showers blessings on us. To have compassion for others helps us to connect with the supreme soul. All creatures on Earth are a part of God and we must have compassion for all.

Humility: Humility is a form of modesty, which comes from divine awareness. A person has to surrender his ego to the Almighty as he is omnipotent. Then only will modesty develop in a person. We have to realize that we are all a part of the supreme soul. One will be liberated from ego and pride, and be prepared to unite with God.

Moderation in Diet: A moderate diet means a balanced diet; food should be simple and pure. A weak body can never support a strong mind. One should neither overeat nor under eat, and take food as per the requirements of his body. For a strong and fit body, importance should be given to the quality of food, maintaining a time schedule, and consuming nutritious food in the required quantity.

Cleanliness: Cleanliness is one of the most significant elements of a healthy life. A person must maintain cleanliness for a happy and prosperous life. It signifies both inner and outer cleanliness.
